Is aoibhinn leinn a bhith a’ seinn an òrain gaoil milis seo.
We learned this bonny song from the singing of Brian’s parents, Aidan and Joyce. The words are a combination of a rendition by Mrs Mercer, Upper Island Cove, Conception Bay, Newfoundland in the 1920’s and Jack Hennessy of Kilfinane, Co. Limerick in the 1850’s.
lyrics
The pink, the lily, and the blooming rose
Grow in the garden where my true love goes
The little small birds they do rejoice
When they think they hear my love Jimmy’s voice
The summer has come, and the grass is green
The leaves are budding on every tree
The ships are sailing upon the sea
And I’ll soon find tidings of grá mo chroí
O, James, mo chroí, I do love you well
I love you better than tongue can tell
There’s not one drop of the morning dew
That’s half so sweet as one kiss from you
